How to Choose a Good Chinese Jade?
Chinese Jade
is one of the most typical traditional symbols of China. China has been given the name of "Jade kingdom". In most of Chinese people's heart, jade is the symbol of beauty. Chinese people began to respect, wear, appreciate and collect jade from the ancient time.
The jade maker of the previous generations poured the natural beauty and spirit beauty into the jade, and make the jade into varies shapes. The natural material of jade match with the carving beauty form the jade is delightful contrast. So when choosing a jade you should know how to distinguish the genuine jade, how to choose the best jade, and how to choose the proper size.
A Chinese proverb says "There is a price for gold, but no price for jade" – one can put a price on gold, but jade is priceless. Even though there is no "Jade standard" like gold, emerald still has its price.
Just like when buying clothes, you have to look at the textures and colors to judge the value. We call emerald color "se," and when we talk about texture, we refer to the "water" in the Jade. These two things: color and water, directly determine the value of emerald.
TRANSPARENCY
Transparency of Chinese emerald affects the refraction of light and its beauty. When light enters a transparent emerald with fine texture, it sparkles; if light enters an opaque emerald with coarse texture, it refracts dull light to the eye that reduces attractiveness.
CLARITY
Clarity refers to inclusions, which covered with jade during the formation process, mainly in black and white. In general, white inclusions are less distracting than black ones and, of course, the less visible the inclusion the better.
COLOUR
Color is of paramount importance. We examine the color of emerald according to the following criteria: Purity refers to the proportion of the prime and the secondary colors. Let's take green emerald as example, the most desirable is pure green; in descending order of desirability are green tinted with yellow, blue and grey.
Intensity the more saturated the green the better the jade. However, an overdone intensity is of only middling quality. Vividness The color should be vibrant and lively. The presence of grey and black makes the green dull without altering its tint. The more even the color, the more desirable the jade and the higher the value.
CUTTING
Chinese Emerald is usually worked into two categories: plain polished shapes such as cabochon and carved designs. Plain polished shapes require higher grade material without flaws, and with good proportion, symmetry as well as appropriate thickness. For example, a well-cut cabochon should be neither too thick nor too thin in relation to the area of its top surface. Its "bulge" should be centered, prominent but not exaggerated.
Carved designs are often used to eliminate or minimize the effect of flaws and cracks. They are assessed on their aesthetics and the workmanship of the details.
Another quick (but sometimes destructive) test is to use your Swiss blade to scratch the jade. (Do this at an inconspicuous spot, just in case!) Jade is harder than steel and should not scratch. In some cases, there may be a line of metal that adheres onto the rock. Examine it well so as not to confuse it with a true scratch. Many stimulants are softer than jade and will yield to a steel blade.
