Diego Rivera Paintings Reflect The Essence Of Mexican Realist Art
Art is defined as a conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colours, forms or other elements in a manner that appeals to our aesthetic sensibilities. There are distinct artistic movements which came into being as a result of the events in a particular era in the history. You could have probably heard about realism and impressionism, which are two movements that show style and purpose. As the name suggests, realism speaks of subjects as they appear in daily life. There are quite a few well-known realist painters in different parts of the world. If you have spotted any painting of Diego Rivera, that means you have seen samples of Mexican Realist Art works. As one of the most renowned Mexican artists of the twentieth century, Diego Rivera's works can be found all over the world. These come in the form of paintings or as murals decorating public walls.
The style that Diego Rivera used in his work combines traditional Mexican folk art utilising bright and lovely colors and the portrayal of people going through their everyday routine. His artworks vary from paintings that exhibit images of farmers, laborers and vendors to portraits that show political and historical occurrences like revolutions and protests. He did not think twice whenever he wanted to express himself thru his work, making him gain the respect and admiration of most painters in the generations that follow. Among his most important murals which caught the attention of people are: the Labors of the Mexican People, Mural of the National Palace in Mexico City and Man at the Crossroads (Rockefeller Center in New York City). The Labors of the Mexican People showed social struggles of the workers against the upper classes. The Mural of the National Palace is a interpretation of Mexico's history divided into three: pre-hispanic Mexico, the period covering the conquest to the present and Mexico as seen today and the future. The Man at the Crossroads which portrayed the elitist society in one section and a group of protesters in the opposite section initiated a major political uproar which led to the suspension and destruction of the project.
Aside from the murals, his paintings were also famous. Some of these works are: the Flower Carrier, the Flower Seller, The Flowered Canoe and Pareja Indigena. These days, with all the advancement in technology, you could basically own a Diego Rivera work of art. There is a riches of art reproduction companies engaged in the reproduction of your preferred masterpieces. You may see a lot of them on the Internet. Would my artwork be considered "primitive art"?
I took two "art" classes in college, one was an introduction to art with a lab, and one was an oil painting class at a junior college. I am self-taught, and have been doing a lot of artwork recently. I am in need of a short bio, and am confused as to how to describe my illustrations. I assume from the definition I find that my work would be categorized as "primitive art" or "folk art," in that I have no formal training. However, my artwork does not fit into the genre from the examples I can find. I would like to know how vague the definition of a primitive artist is, and if I would consider myself one. Thank you!
Primitive art can describe ancient art like cave painting (a category which you wouldn't fall under), but usually Primitive Art is called Art Brut, or Outsider Art, and, yes, it means art produced by someone who is untrained, but usually denotes a quality of specific in-expertise. Unfortunately (for simplicity's sake) I don't think you fall under the category of Primitive Art. Without seeing your artwork it wold be impossible to say, however. You should post some and only then can we make a declarative statement about what category (if any) your style may fall under. Even self-taught artists can fall under headings like surrealist, impressionist, expressionist, neo-classical, etc.
