Where did Valentines Day Originate?

REMEMBERING ROMANCE WITH A VINTAGE VICTORIAN VALENTINE'S...

With February 14th fast approaching, this Valentine's day it is all about shabby chic, burlesque and vintage glamour... From the 1950's inspired feminine frills and ditzy floral print evening dresses littering the pages of fashion magazines this season, to the must-have boudoir lace long-line lingerie flying off high-street shelves and awakening the 40's pin-ups within us, we love that our favourite vintage fashions and shabby chic styles are back this Valentine's day!

But where did this tradition of couples celebrating the joy of their togetherness by exchanging messages and gifts of love on Valentine's Day begin?

One story of the history of Valentine's Day tells the tale of a Roman priest from the third Century named Valentine who believed in love and marriage with such a passion that he continued to wed couples in secret matrimony during the times of anti-marriage laws. Valentine was caught and sentenced to life in jail where it is said that he fell in love with the daughter of a prison guard who proved to him that love cannot be beaten. When Valentine died on February 14th 269 A.D, he left a note of kind words to the prison guard's daughter, thanking her for her friendship, love and loyalty - he signed it "Love from your Valentine". It is said that to commemorate this day and pay tribute to the Patron Saint of Lovers, we exchange similar messages of friendship, love and loyalty to our partners on February 14th too.

Another story piecing together the foundations of St Valentine's Day comes from Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th Century poem "Parlement of Foules". This is the first recorded association of love, romance and Valentine's Day - stating that it is on February 14th that birds choose their mate, and so on this date the single ones among us are encouraged to seek partnership in the same way.

Whatever the true roots are of this upcoming holiday... what better way to celebrate St Valentine's Day than in elegant, classy vintage style – enjoying fine cuisine served on vintage style ceramics, and romancing your loved ones with retro chic gifts of beautifully scented candles, heart shaped picture frames, glamorous vintage style mannequins, hanging heart t-light lanterns and other decorative shabby chic love inspired accessories to represent the origins of romance... without indulging too deep into its cheesy hype and commercialism with novelty candy underwear and stuffed cuddly monkeys wearing t-shirts reading "I'M BANANAS ABOUT YOU!!" – Although, of course a little bit of Valentine's Day cheesiness on the side doesn't hurt...
